Why Are the FBI, CIA and DHS Monitoring Social Media?

You Thought Free Speech Was In Danger Before?

So, As I have written about and linked to in past posts on this site and others, namely my social media outlets, it seems that over the last six months the online community has seen a massive influx of three letter acronyms like the FBI, CIA and DHS along with apparently the United States Air Force begin to either admit or announce that they are going to be monitoring social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and others to more accurately asses the global and local populations thoughts.

No, seriously, the big three letter names really do just want to get into the trends business…and if you believe that, well then I have a ton of really great real estate to sell you.

So with this disturbing new announcement that the FBI will now be following and infiltrating social media sites I was forced to begin wondering why the big three, and the Air Force and almost assuredly the NSA are looking into monitoring you and your friends and your friends friends, and of course those that they may deem “bad actors” or malcontents or really anyone who doesn’t fit the mold of dutiful citizen, defined by whatever set of standards they have for dutiful citizen.

The Hand that Grips the People

It’s no surprise that these agencies want to monitor social media and popular networking sites such as Twitter ( the site recently has come under fire from activists and protesters across the globe for its new censorship program) Facebook, Google+ and others due to the proliferation of such outlets being used for the dissemination of alternative and counter authoritarian view points. The British government after the London riots, sparked by the needless killing of unarmed suspect Mark Duggan and fueled by social and economic unrest, tried to initiate a veritable social media kill switch -after the rioters used primarily Twitter and Blackberry’s formerly encrypted BBM service to coordinate nearly a weeks worth of rioting.

We have only to look at the “Occupy” movement in our own country to see the use of social media sites as a means of communicating and expressing dissent with the global corporate and political masters. The use of these and other methods of social interaction on the web by the likes of Anonymous and other hacktivist groups, along with the preppers, anti-globalists and “conspiracy theorists” such as 9/11 truthers and most prominently, Alex Jones listeners/followers has allowed an anti corporatocracy message to spread around the globe, and certainly gain traction here in the United States.

So then, who along with the FBI is monitoring our profiles?

A List :
1. The CIA, who went public with their monitoring around 2009.

2. The DHS, who went public with their plan around Nov. of 2011or this article is just as good

3. The FBI, who recently came out and admitted their intentions of monitoring.

4. The NSA…nothing I can confirm nor deny, but many online believe that they own and run Google.

5. The U.S. Air Force, who have been outlining and planning since, most likely 2010 or earlier to monitor everything on the internet.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I don’t have my own theories as to why the most powerful domestic and international intelligence, law enforcement and anti-terrorist agencies along with a whole separate branch of America’s military are monitoring, basically everything we do online. To do that would be silly.

So here’s what I think.

I think the control machine or police state or whatever it is that’s being currently implemented in the United States is scared of what they see in other countries. Scared of a political awakening, the likes of which have never been seen. I see them clamoring to homogenize the internet with the criminal ACTA treaty, along with the for now shelved SOPA and PIPA bills. I see a desperate and frankly sad attempt to stop the further undermining of corporatist think. If we are all made to fit into the mold of silent servitude and complacency then we are easier to control. And control is what the police state is all about.

A technocratic fascist takeover is being launched, it’s staggering when you read, everyday, that there is some new form of technological achievement that’s being made in the name of surveillance and war, but not in the means of peaceful co-existence and the sharing of new ideas.

Take for example the use of unmanned drones in America’s cities, the infiltrating and militarization of our local police forces , by federal means and the recent development and passing of bills that seem tailor made to curtail the individual liberties that are specifically outlined in the legal documents of our land, such as the NDAA and the Enemy Expatriation Act.

Now tell me, honestly, what you’ve read in the last six months that’s been positive? Show me something that we’ve seen since the Bush Administration that’s been a grand and shining example in regards to human achievement, that hasn’t now-nor plans to be co-opted for the takeover and control of freedoms in this country? I doubt that there are many. The recent decision by the high courts that police can not legally pop a GPS tracker on your vehicle or person without a proper warrant is certainly one, but that’s about it from recent memory.

I’m not a pessimist, not naturally at least. I still believe we as a free people can turn this thing around, but it’s going to take more than the handful of us that are actively keeping up to date with these happenings. It’s going to take participation from you and me and everyone around the world. Peaceful Resistance is the key. Boycotts, demonstrations, protests, activism, and a personal awareness cultivated by actively questioning the powers that be and holding them accountable for their mistakes. We are the resistance, so lets resist.
